SMYRNA, Georgia — Smyrna police arrested 17 people, including 10 accused of driving under the influence, during a recent traffic safety checkpoint on Windy Hill Road.
The checkpoint was intended to identify impaired, unlicensed and dangerous drivers, police said.
In addition to the DUI arrests, officers arrested four people on charges involving unlicensed or suspended driving, two on felony drug charges and one on another charge.
Police issued 59 citations and impounded 14 vehicles.
K-9 Loki conducted 52 open-air vehicle sniffs and alerted officers four times, police said. Each alert led to the discovery of illegal contraband, including evidence connected to the two felony drug arrests.
Two drivers attempted to avoid the checkpoint by committing separate traffic violations, according to police. Officers stopped both vehicles and determined that one driver was unlicensed and the other was driving under the influence.
Both were arrested.
