The city of Smyrna announced it intends to increase its 2026 property taxes by adopting a millage rate 1.77% higher than the state-calculated rollback rate.
If approved, the higher millage rate would generate more property tax revenue than the rollback rate, which is designed to produce the same revenue as the previous year's tax rate after accounting for changes in property assessments. City officials said the additional revenue is needed to continue providing services to residents.
Property values in Smyrna are reassessed annually by the Cobb County Tax Assessor's Office, as required under Georgia law. When rising home sale prices indicate that market values have increased, the tax assessor must adjust property assessments accordingly.
Before the rate can be finalized, the city is required by Georgia law to hold three public hearings.
The public hearings will be held in the City Hall Council Chamber, 2800 King St. SE, on Monday, July 13, at 6 p.m., and on Monday, July 20, at 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Residents will have the opportunity to comment on the proposed increase before the City Council votes on the final millage rate.
