Atlanta watershed officials investigate possible chemical release after South River fish kill

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Department of Watershed Management is investigating a possible chemical release at the South River Water Reclamation Center after reports of a fish kill in the South River.

The department said early results suggest some material may have reached storm drains, but officials are still working to determine the source of the leak, the volume released and any environmental impact.

Watershed crews have been deployed to collect water quality samples. The department said it is coordinating with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division as the investigation continues.

Officials said additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

The news follows a combined sewer overflow from the city of Atlanta that caused a fish kill that left roughly 44,509 fish dead along nearly 16 miles of the Chattahoochee River in May.
