Smyrna police have identified and charged a man accused of striking another driver multiple times with a handgun during a June road rage incident.
Police said they obtained a warrant Aug. 14 for Freddrick Hammonds on one felony count of aggravated battery. The department said assistance from the public helped investigators identify him and announced that the case had been closed.
The incident occurred June 27 after occupants of two vehicles became involved in a traffic dispute while traveling through Smyrna. Police said a driver in his 50s noticed the other vehicle following him after he turned off the main roadway.
The driver stopped and got out of his vehicle to speak with the occupants of the other vehicle. The encounter escalated into a physical altercation, during which police said the victim was struck multiple times with a handgun.
Investigators previously identified the driver of the suspect vehicle as 18-year-old Hayle Kirkpatrick. She was charged with obstruction of law enforcement officers in connection with the investigation.
